~Gone Buggy~

Like many of our theme units, Gone Buggy is full of outside links for web sources.  If you have any difficulty with any of the outside links, please let us know.  Many resources for this lesson have come from Learning Page.  You must be a member to use these sheets,  but membership is free.   There are two areas to this theme unit Projects & Activities and Lesson Plans.  To create your own theme lesson plans, use our theme planner printable.

Fun Projects & Activities
~Make a Bug Journal~
Visit www.shapebooks.com and pick your favorite insect shape to make a shape book journal (these are under free printables).  Make a copy for each child on card stock (or you can laminate the front and back after they are colored). Since you don't need the picture on the back use a copy of the shape as a pattern to trace around.  You will have a plain back to run off on card stock.  Now you can use the same pattern to make the sheets for the book, just add lines with a ruler if you like and run off on copy paper.  Be sure you have some shaped pages with no lines for students to add illustrations to their journals.  Give students a journal topic for each day and at the end of your unit, assemble the books by stapling or using a hole punch and stitching together.

~Take a Buggy Field Trip~
At Learning Page you can download lesson plans for each theme unit.  Download the insect lesson plans for 1st-2nd graders (this field trip can be used for any age group).  Prepare any of the Collecting Devices lists (instructions are given) before you go hunting for bugs.  Divide students into groups (for large classes) and give each group a copy of the Insect Inventory Page.  Take students to the playground or a local park (or even your back yard!)  Have students look at each insect and keep an inventory of the insects they see on your field trip.  After the students have returned they can create a bug scrapbook by making a book (can be a shape book if you like) of sketches

~Mural Mania~
Every theme at Learning Page has a great mural activity with it.  The mural background can be downloaded as one 15 page file (to make downloading easier, right click on the link to the pdf file and "save target as".  This way you don't have to open the file to save it.)  For larger groups of children you will want to more copies of each page, all the mural backgrounds are continuous and can be made as large as needed.  Working at home with our two children we only need one copy of each page.  Color the backgrounds (this takes us about a week, and I usually work on them once the kids are in bed too).  You can add as much or as little color as you like, and more coloring can always be done once the background has been assembled and is up on the wall.  Use the cut outs for the insects theme from Learning page to add life to your mural.  I love these because they are made to scale and students can see a good comparison of true size in nature.

~Insect Fact File~
Learning Page has a great fact file available with each theme unit.  Younger children will enjoy coloring the pictures while you tell them a bit about the insects and older children will use their fact files to complete science activities.  I have created a cover for the insect fact files that you can use.  There is extra space at the bottom for each child to add their name.  You can print these out and attach them to bracket folders (the ones that you can add pages to) for kids to have a fact file they can use as a research tool.

~Buggy Books Reports~
Stephen Cosgrove has written a wonderful series of books affectionately known in our home as the Bugg Books.  We have quite a collection of them and to use them in lessons I have created a Buggy Book report.  I have modified it so that you can use it for any buggy books your children read for this theme.  Visit Learning Page for a  recommended reading list for this theme.

~Magic School Bus Lessons~
Our kids love the Magic School Bus and I love the extra activities Scholastic provides free of charge on their web site.  You can purchase the videos if you like, but check your local library first, ours has a great selection you can rent for free.  Here are the insect related titles to look for:
Ants in Its Pants
Butterfly and the Bog Beast
In a Beehive
Spins a Web
Each of these titles has a wonderful lesson with it on the Scholastic web site.  You can use the printable activities as well as the hands on ideas.  None of these activities require watching the videos to complete so even if you can't find a video you can still do the activity.

~Buggy Math~
Are your students learning addition or multiplication facts?  Create an Inch by Inch worm to measure progress.  Make a head from green construction paper with antennae and eyes with a name tag that hags (as if around the neck) for each child's name.   Cut 10 circles and number 0-9.  As each child can do the facts for a number they get to add it to their worm.  This idea can also be used to measure the amount of books a child has read for a reading goal (such as AR).  You can use our buggy patterns to make your inch by inch worm of you like.
